The Portsmouth community is coming together in grief following the sudden and violent passing of Christopher M. Blair, 47, who was fatally shot at his home on Saturday night, April 18, 2026. Known to friends and neighbors as a kind soul and a fixture in the Mayflower Road area, his death has left a void that family members say can never be filled.
The Incident
Emergency services were called to the 200 block of Mayflower Road at approximately 10:44 PM on Saturday. Officers arrived to find Mr. Blair suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Quick Arrest in the Investigation
Portsmouth Detectives acted swiftly, identifying a suspect within hours of the shooting. Police have arrested 54-year-old Bentley Tramaine Cherry and charged him with:
- First-Degree Murder
- Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
- Shooting in the Commission of a Felony
According to preliminary reports, the tragedy appears to have stemmed from a domestic-related argument between Blair and Cherry at the residence. Cherry is currently being held at the Portsmouth City Jail without bond.
